Several years ago in management school I was introduced to Larry Greiner's work on how organizations grow. This model of his below is a classic and one I think all startups should use as a guide to navigate their growth hurdles. It's one of my top 5 favourite growth models.
Often we think no one else has our challenges and we are unique - but if you look closely at the "crisis" at each stage below you'll no doubt see that often our growing pains are predictable and therefore manageable.
