Who's Your Role Model?

Since today is Friday I thought I'd offer some "mental floss" as my friend Eliot calls it.  Something worth thinking about but not too heavy - after all the weekend is almost here!

I think every company should have a role model to watch, analyze, and learn from.  This role model is not a person, it's the actual organization.  It could be:

• an organization that's executed a similar business model as you're planning, from which you can learn,
• or one that has gone through the growing pains in terms of headcount growth, physical expansion, etc. from which you can see
• a company that lived through the challenges of being a first mover in a new market (ie. like salesforce.com with their hosted solution for contact management).

These are just a few examples - what you're looking for is someone to look up to - a company that's bigger than you are, a bit more experienced or established, and one you can truly read up on, learn from, and hopefully avoid some mistakes along the path to growth. I've had CEOs that have even called up the CEO of their role model company to "compare notes".

I've suggested this idea to many presidents over the past several years, and most of the time it's had some great results.  Mull it over (or mental floss) and see what you think.
